WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior guards
Simone Foreman and
Kaitlyn Flanagan posted double-double efforts as the Holy Cross women's basketball team earned a 69-61 victory against Patriot League opponent American on Sunday afternoon in the Hart Center Arena.
The victory was the fifth straight for the Crusaders (9-4, 2-0 PL). Foreman double-doubled for the second straight game, third time this season and for the sixth time of her career with a game-high 22 points with 10 rebounds adding a career-high four steals. Flanagan tallied 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds with two steals for her first ever double-double. Junior forward
Meg Cahalan dropped 21 points shooting 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the field and 50 percent (4-of-8) from deep with five rebounds and two blocks.
For American (0-13, 0-2 PL), Cecilia Kay double-doubled with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Trailing 2-0, Holy Cross scored seven straight points with Foreman notching a steal to layup and a wing triple for the 7-2 score early in the first. The Eagles countered with six in a row to regain the lead at 8-7. Flanagan converted a hoop and harm for the 12-8 advantage. American led 13-12 through one.
- Down three, 15-12, Flanagan and Cahalan put their team back in front, 17-15 with a layup and corner three-ball. Cahalan drilled another three and senior Lauren Huber scored a fast break deuce for the 27-21 margin with 3:28 left before the break. Seven straight for American put them ahead 28-27. Holy Cross ended the half with back-to-back threes from Flanagan and Cahalan for the 33-28 lead.
- The Eagles trimmed the deficit to three, 37-34 converting a floater in the paint. Cahalan's fourth three of the game with two Foreman freebies opened up an eight point 42-34 edge. Sophomore Kendall Eddy knocked down a mid-range jumper for the 48-39 margin through three stanzas.
- Holy Cross started the fourth on an 8-2 run to open up a 15 point lead as Cahalan tallied her 20th point of the contest. A 13-3 Eagle run put them down five, 59-54 with 1:44 left. Flanagan dished to Huber for her 10th assist increasing the lead. Two Foreman free throws regained the double-digit lead with 45 seconds left.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Crusaders have started Patriot League play 2-0 for the fourth straight season.
- Flanagan becomes the first Crusader since Alex Smith (12) at Bucknell on March 6, 2014 to record 10 or more assists in a game.
- Dating back to her freshman year, Flanagan has totaled four or more assists 40 times and the Crusaders are 30-10 (.750) in those games.
- The 20+ point showing was the fifth of the season for Foreman, the Crusaders are 5-0 (1.000) in those games.
- Foreman tallied her 500th career rebound in the contest.
- Cahalan matched a career-best with four three-pointers.
- Huber established a new personal-high with three steals and tied a career-high with six points.
