Men’s ice hockey heads west to face Air Force

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team is set to head to Colorado Springs, Colo. for a two-game set against Atlantic Hockey opponent Air Force on Friday, Jan. 24 at 9 p.m. ET and Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. ET. Both games will stream live on FloHockey.

THE CRUSADERS (11-11-2, 10-4-2 AHA):
  • Holy Cross will round out its two-week road trip with a two-game set at Air Force.
  • The Crusaders earned five out of six points last weekend, sweeping Bentley behind a 3-2 overtime win on Friday and a commanding 5-1 win on Saturday.
  • Following the series, freshman Matt Kursonis and senior Thomas Gale were named Atlantic Hockey Rookie and Goaltender of the Week, respectively.
  • Gale finished the weekend with 59 saves in 122 minutes of work, a 1.48 goals-against average, and .952 save percentage. Of the three goals that Gale allowed, two were on the man-advantage. Gale made 31 saves on Saturday, marking his 11th game with 30+ saves. This is the fourth time this season where Gale has allowed three or fewer goals in an AHA weekend series. In his last nine appearances, Gale has allowed two goals or fewer in eight games, including four straight.
  • Kursonis finished the weekend series with three goals and two assists, 23 faceoff wins, two blocked shots, and a +4 rating. Kursonis scored within the first 35 seconds of each contest, and led both sides with 14 faceoff wins on Friday.
  • Seniors Liam McLinskey and Thomas Gale were announced as nominees for the 2025 Hobey Baker Award on Wednesday morning.
  • McLinskey has recorded 12 goals and ten assists for 22 points in 24 games this season. His 12 goals and .50 goals per game rank third in Atlantic Hockey, while his 22 points and 0.92 points per game rank seventh and tenth, respectively, among Atlantic Hockey skaters. McLinskey held an NCAA-leading seven-game goal streak from Nov. 7 to Nov. 30, over which the Crusaders went 4-2-1, and has recorded six multi-point efforts this season. The Pearl River, N.Y. native is one of two Hobey Baker top-10 finalists from last season to return to college hockey this year.
  • Gale carries a 2.25 goals-against average and .924 save percentage on the season with an 11-10-2 record in 23 games. Gale has held opponents to two or fewer goals on 14 occasions and picked up a shutout in an overtime matchup against AIC on Dec. 6.
  • Gale's save percentage ranks fourth nationally among goaltenders who have played 20+ games this season, while his goals-against average ranks sixth. Overall in Atlantic Hockey, hissave percentage and goals-against rank third in each category.
  • Holy Cross' kill percentage of 89.0% is the best mark in Atlantic Hockey and ranks third in the nation behind only Western Michigan and Boston College.
SCOUTING AIR FORCE (11-14-1, 8-8-0 AHA):
  • Air Force enters the contest with an 8-8-0 record in Atlantic Hockey contests, placing them in sixth in the standings, five points behind Holy Cross.
  • The Falcons traveled to West Point, N.Y. over the weekend for their annual rivalry series with AHA foe Army. The Falcons were swept by the Black Knights, falling on Friday, 3-2, before losing in overtime on Saturday, 4-3. The week before against Bentley, the Falcons split the series, falling 1-0 on Friday before winning on Saturday, 4-1.
  • Senior Clayton Cosentino leads the team with 18 points and 13 assists, while junior Chris Hedden leads the squad with nine goals.
     
ALL TIME SERIES:
  • The two teams have met 61 times, with the Falcons leading the all-time series, 25-22-14.
  • The Crusaders, however, are undefeated in the last ten meetings between the two programs, dating back to Jan. 2020. In the last ten meeting at Cadet Ice Arena, dating back to Nov. 2015, the Crusaders are 6-3-1.
  • The two teams met for a two-game set on Feb. 2 and 3 at the Hart Center Rink last season, where the Crusaders swept the Falcons, winning by scores of 6-3 and 5-2.
  • Six current Crusaders recorded at least a point over the series, led by then-freshman Jack Stockfish, who recorded seven points on two goals and five assists, earning his first career Atlantic Hockey weekly award in the process (Rookie of the Week, Feb. 5).
