Turnpike Trophy weekend showdown with No. 15 Boston University

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team will play a home-away series with No. 15 Boston University on Friday, Jan. 24, and Saturday, Jan. 25. The Crusaders will host the nationally ranked Terriers for game one at 6 p.m. on Friday for their White Out, Turnpike Trophy and Cousy Cup game in the Hart Center Rink. No. 15 Boston University has a 4 p.m. puck drop set for game two at Walter Brown. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+. 

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (7-13-3, 3-11-3 Hockey East): 

  • The Crusaders recently concluded a four-point weekend with Merrimack on Jan. 17 and 18. Game one ended in a 1-1 tie with Holy Cross taking the 1-0 shootout victory and game two had a 2-2 final result and the Crusaders picked up two more points on the 2-1 shootout win.
  • Midway through the first period of game one, sophomore assistant captain Emily Crovo picked off the puck and found senior forward Michela Lio in front of the net for the back-handed goal at 7:41.
  • Merrimack tied the game 1-1 late in the second period with a goal at 16:13.
  • Neither team scored in the third period or overtime to end the game 1-1 and force a shootout to determine which team earns the extra point in Hockey East standings.
  • Crovo netted the first goal of the shootout and junior goalie Abby Hornung shut out the Warriors in all three attempts to help the Crusaders pick up two points in the competition.
  • In the first period of game two, the Warriors struck first with a goal at 2:01 for the early advantage. At 6:33, Crovo and freshman forward Amanda Aslan set up junior defender Taylor Cantelon for the power-play one-time at the point to tie the game 1-1. With just 20 seconds left in the period, freshman defender Hannah Deck whipped a shot from the point to steal the lead and end the opening frame. Junior assistant captain Alexia Moreau was credited with the assist.
  • In the second period, Merrimack converted on the power-play at 11:34 for the 2-2 result.
  • Neither team scored in the third period or overtime to end the game in a 2-2 tie.
  • The Crusaders won the shootout 2-1 with Moreau and Deck scoring to take home the extra point in league standings.
  • Crovo is currently Holy Cross's leading in every offensive category. She has scored six goals on the year, three of which were on the power-play, and had 10 assists for 16 points. Senior captain Emma Min leads the Holy Cross defense with 61 blocks so far this season, 32 more than the closest Crusader.
  • Hornung started between the Crusaders' pipes in both games. She made 29 saves in game one shutting out the Warriors in the shootout. In game two, she made 25 saves and six saves on seven shootout attempts. Hornung owns a current 2.01 goals against with a .937 save percentage.

TIPS ON THE TERRIERS (14-8-1, 11-4-1 Hockey East):

  • No. 15 Boston University enters the series coming off a two-game losing streak. The Terriers lost their single-game weekend set at New Hampshire 2-0 on Jan. 18 and fell 4-0 to Northeastern in the 46th Dunkin' Women's Beanpot Championship game on Jan. 21.
  • Over the weekend, the Wildcats got on the board midway through the opening period for the 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second period, New Hampshire extended its lead with an early goal at 1:22 in the final frame to take the 2-0 win over the Terriers. 
  • In the 46th Dunkin' Women's Beanpot Championship game, Northeastern struck first at 8:31 in the first period. The Huskies tallied two more goals in the second period and sealed the 4-0 win with a third-period empty netter at 17:16.
  • Junior forward Sydney Healey currently leads Boston University with nine goals so far this season. Graduate defender Julia Shaunessy holds the most assists (13) and most (14) on the team this year. graduate defender Tamara Giaquinto has made 32 blocks so far this year, the most of any Terrier.
  • Senior goalie Callie Shanahan is Boston University's go-to choice in the net making 22 saves against the Wildcats and 27 saves versus the Huskies. She now owns a 12-6-1 record, with three shutouts, a 1.77 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage.

LAST TIME THEY MET:

  • Holy Cross and No. 15 Boston University met earlier this season with the Terriers taking a 3-0 victory over the Crusaders on Jan. 3.
  • The Crusaders hold a 7-12-0 all-time and 6-11-0 conference series record against the Terriers.
