McLinskey nets overtime winner as men’s hockey defeats Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team defeated Bentley, 3-2, in overtime on Friday night at the Bentley Arena.

Holy Cross improves to 10-11-2 (9-4-2 AHA) on the season, while Bentley moves to 12-9-2 (10-6-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Freshman Matt Kursonis wasted no time getting the Crusaders on the board, scoring on the first shot of the game for Holy Cross just 35 seconds into the contest. Sophomore Brody Gagno sent a stretch pass to junior Matt DeBoer at the blue line, who carried the puck into the zone before finding Kursonis for the cross-ice pass. Unmarked, Kursonis picked his corner to beat the Bentley netminder on his blocker side.
  • Bentley tied the game with 7:53 to go in the second, before taking the 2-1 lead with 2:57 to go on the power play.
  • Junior Devin Phillips knotted the game at 2-2 with 8:09 to play in the third period. Forcing a turnover in the corner, senior John Gelatt knocked the puck loose to Phillips. Phillips sent the puck forward to find a player out front, but after a deflection, the puck found its way into the net.
  • The Crusaders earned a power play opportunity 2:08 into the extra frame, which lasted for five seconds as senior Liam McLinskey rifled a shot past the Bentley netminder for the overtime win.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior Thomas Gale recorded 28 saves in the contest.
  • Kursonis picked up his second multi-point game of the season tonight, while also leading both sides with 14 faceoff wins.
  • Holy Cross dominated at the faceoff dot, winning 59.4% (41-28) of the total draws.

UP NEXT:
  • The two teams will face off again tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m., at the Bentley Arena.
