Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men’s ice hockey rides four goal first period to dominant win over Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team defeated Bentley, 5-1, on Saturday night at the Bentley Arena.

Holy Cross improves to 11-11-2 (10-4-2 AHA) on the season, while Bentley falls to 12-10-2 (10-7-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Freshman Matt Kursonis opened the scoring 22 seconds into the contest, scoring on the opening shot for either side for the second-straight night. Carrying the puck into the zone on the two-on-one, Kursonis unleashed a shot from the faceoff dot that the Bentley goalie had no time to react to.
  • Kursonis found the back of the net again at the 14:02 mark of the period, getting a pass from junior Jack Seymour before sending a wrist shot through the Falcons' netminder.
  • Junior Timothy Heinke extended the Crusader lead to 3-0 with 4:05 to go in the opening period, sending a shot from the side boards that found its way into the back of the net.
  • Junior Mack Oliphant picked up his first goal of the season to give the Crusaders the 4-0 lead with 1:16 to play in the first. Picking up the rebound off a shot by Kursonis, Oliphant chipped the puck over the outstretched goaltender for the score.
  • Neither team was able to score in the middle frame, as the Crusaders held onto their 4-0 lead going into the third.
  • Bentley got on the board with a power play goal with 5:18 remaining in regulation.
  • Heinke got his second of the game with 2:47 remaining, chasing down the puck for an empty net strike.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior Thomas Gale recorded 31 saves in the contest, marking his 11th game this season with 30+ saves.
  • Kursonis recorded his first career three-point game and first multi-goal game of his career tonight, finishing with two goals and an assist.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. for a two-game set with Air Force on Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25.
