Men’s ice hockey ties with Robert Morris, takes extra point with shootout win

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team tied Robert Morris, 2-2, before taking the extra point in the Atlantic Hockey standings with a 1-0 shootout win, on Saturday night at the Hart Center Rink.

Holy Cross moves to 9-11-2 (8-4-2 AHA) on the season, while Robert Morris moves to 8-10-3 (5-6-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening period, though Robert Morris held the slight edge in shots, 10-7.
  • Senior John Gelatt broke the ice with 14:03 to go in the second period. Senior Liam McLinskey chased the free puck down along the boards in the offensive zone before dropping a pass back to junior Devin Phillips. Phillips sent the puck across the ice, finding Gelatt in stride for the wrist shot to take the 1-0 lead.
  • The lead stood until the 10:43 mark of the third period when Robert Morris tied it up on the power play.
  • Junior Matt DeBoer regained the lead for the Crusaders just over five minutes later, rifling a wrist shot past the Colonials netminder off a clean faceoff win by freshman Matt Kursonis.
  • Robert Morris tied it back up at 2-2 with 3:25 to go in regulation. The Crusaders netted the go-ahead goal 20 seconds later, but after an official review it was called back for goaltender interference.
  • Each team took two shots in the overtime period, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
  • Junior Michael Abgrall proved to be the hero in the shootout, netting the only goal for either side in the third round of the shootout.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior Thomas Gale recorded 23 saves in the contest, while stopping all three shootout attempts by the Colonials.
  • Junior Matt DeBoer skated in his 100th collegiate game tonight. DeBoer made his debut on Oct. 27, 2022 at North Dakota.
  • Holy Cross held Robert Morris' power play unit to just one-for-eight on the man advantage over the weekend series. Robert Morris came into the weekend with the nation's 12th best power play unit.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will travel to Waltham, Mass. for a two-game set against Atlantic Hockey opponent Bentley on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m.
