SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Holy Cross volleyball team was downed by nonconference opponent Abilene Christian 3-0 in straight sets during the final day of competition at the UTSA Invitational.
The loss sends the Crusaders to 1-5 while the Wildcats improve to 2-4. For Holy Cross, freshman
Gabby Wold produced a game-high matching nine kills to go with eight digs.
SET SCORES:
Wildcats 3, Crusaders 0 (14-25, 17-25, 16-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- ACU took a two point lead, 10-8 and recorded four straight markers to build a five point 16-11 edge. AÂ senior Abbie Lane kill at the left pin cut into the margin at 16-13. The Wildcats scored nine of the final 10 points to capture the set 25-14.
- ACU began the second set with a 4-0 advantage. Trailing 6-2, the Crusaders strung together five straight points to take their first lead 7-6 getting blocks from seniors Rian Millership and Lauren Halverson as well as Lane. The score was knotted 10-10 when ACU used a 9-3 run to build a 19-13 lead. ACU earned a 25-17 second set win.
- With the third set at 6-2, the Crusaders challenged a call that was overturned. It resulted in five straight points to give them a 7-5 lead. ACU rattled off six consecutive points to regain the advantage 11-7 and did not give back the lead.
INSIDE THE BOX:
- Sophomore libero Emma Halstead has tailed double-digit digs in seven straight contests dating back to the final game of 2023.
- Lane needs one more kill for 700 in her career.
- ACU held the advantage in service aces (10-to-1).
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders open their home schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 11 against Bryant with first serve set for 7 p.m.
