Volleyball falls to Bryant in home opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross volleyball team was upended 3-0 by nonconference opponent Bryant on Wednesday evening during the Crusaders home opener in Coach George Blaney '61 Gymnasium.

The loss sends the Crusaders to 1-6 on the young season while the Bulldogs improve to 6-2.

Freshman Gabby Wold led all Holy Cross players with eight kills. Senior Abbie Lane tacked on seven kills and nine digs.

SET SCORES:
Bulldogs 3, Crusaders 0 (20-25, 22-25, 14-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Holy Cross led 15-12 at the media timeout in the opening set. Bryant leveled the score 17-17 outscoring the Crusaders 5-2 over the next few serves forcing them into a timeout. The burst reached 8-2 following the stoppage as the Bulldogs led 20-17. A pair of Bryant service errors halted their run putting the hosts down 23-20. An attack error and a kill gave Bryant the 1-0 match lead.
  • The Crusaders built a 4-0 edge in the second set early as senior Rian Millership accounted for three block assists over the opening moments. Millership kept her team ahead 7-4 belting a kill at the pin. From there Bryant out produced the Crusaders 13-5 to push in front by six. 17-11. On the verge of set point, the Crusaders rallied with Wold producing a pair of kills and a block assists to put her team behind 24-22. Bryant took a timeout and scored the next point for the 2-0 margin.
  • Bryant had a dominant start to the third set and led 14-3 at one point. They cruised to a 25-14 win and the match sweep.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • Millership matched her career-high with six total blocks last achieved Sept. 2, 2023 versus Stonehill.
  • Lane tallied her 700th career kill in the first set and has 706 in her career. She needs 28 more to move into the top-10 all-time in program history.
  • Bryant had the edge in the service game getting nine serves to the Crusaders one.
