WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 2-1, on the 50th anniversary of their first-ever varsity game at the college on Wednesday night at the Hart Turf Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Junior Kendall Blomquist got the Crusaders on the board with just over a minute left in the first half. Picking up the rebound off of a shot by sophomore Maguire Sturgis, Blomquist sent a sweep past the outstretched Sacred Heart goalkeeper.
• Fifth year Sarah Potter extended the Crusader lead to 2-0 just 1:37 into the third quarter, picking up a feed by sophomore Meredith Schepens and beating the Pioneers' goalkeeper with the reverse stick shot.
• Sacred Heart broke the shutout with just under eight minutes remaining in the game, but freshman Mia McCloskey's eight save effort in the final frame denied any further scoring.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Freshman goalkeeper Mia McCloskey turned aside a career-high 16 shots in the matchup. McCloskey's 60 saves this season tops the Patriot League, while her 7.50 saves per game average ranks second.
• Senior Grace Donahue picked up her second defensive save of the season in the contest.
• Sacred Heart held the edge in shots (22-9), shots on goal (18-8), and penalty corners (8-1).

UP NEXT:

• Holy Cross will continue their homestand on Saturday, Sept. 28 when they welcome Patriot League foe Bucknell to the Hart Turf Field at 4 p.m.
