WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross football team fell to Yale, 38-31, on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Fitton Field during a Family Weekend matchup.
Senior quarterback
Joe Pesansky passed for 279 yards, while sophomore running back
Jayden Clerveaux scored three rushing touchdowns and totaled 49 rushing yards. Junior receiver
Max Mosey reeled in five catches for a career-best 129 yards. Sophomore receiver
Maxwell Warren scored his first career touchdown on a 74-yard reception.
Senior linebacker
Frankie Monte had a career-best 17 tackles with a quarterback hurry. Sophomore linebacker
Cam Santee had a career-high seven tackles while recording 1.5 tackles for loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Yale opened the scoring with 9:04 left in the first quarter, as quarterback Brogan McCaughey scrambled three yards into the end zone for a touchdown, giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.
- The Crusaders quickly responded, as Pesansky's first pass of the game was a 74-yard touchdown reception that was reeled in by Warren, knotting the game up at 7-7.
- Yale went ahead after running back Wilhelm Daal rushed two yards into the end zone with six minutes left in the first quarter.
- Holy Cross tied the game up at 14-14 at the start of the second quarter, with Clerveaux capping off a nine-play, 52-yard drive with a one-yard score.
- Yale's Nick Conforti made a 40-yard field goal with 6:40 left in the half, putting Yale ahead, 17-14.
- Holy Cross countered with a boot of their own, as sophomore Daniel Porto's 45-yard kick tied the game up, 17-17, as time expired in the first half.
- Following a fumble by the Crusaders, Yale reeled off an 11-play, 78-yard drive that ended when receiver Pantelis snagged a 24-yard pass from McCaughey, putting Yale ahead 24-17 midway through the third.
- The Crusaders started off the fourth quarter strong, with Clerveaux ending a 13-play drive with a six-yard rush into the end zone to knot things up once again at 24-24.
- Both teams continued to trade touchdowns as the fourth quarter carried on, as Yale's Nathan Denney put his team ahead 31-24 with a five-yard run with 6:32 to go.
- A 42-yard pass from Pesansky to Mosey put the Crusaders at the five-yard line, with Clerveaux finding the end zone for a third time with 3:35 left.
- With the score squared away 31-31, Yale put the last points on the board with 12 seconds left, as Denney rushed the end zone for his second touchdown of the game.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Yale's McCaughey won the Dr. Edward N. Anderson Award, which is presented annually to the outstanding player in the Family Weekend game.
- Mosey's 129 receiving yards are the most by a Crusader this season.
- Clerveaux is the first Crusader to score three touchdowns in a game this year.
- Monte's 17 tackles are the most by a Holy Cross player this year.
