WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior midfielder
John Kowalski scored his first career goal with just 1:07 remaining in the second half, as the Holy Cross men's soccer team earned a 2-2 tie against No. 5 Clemson at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Crusaders now stand 2-3-2 overall, while the Tigers move to 3-1-2 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Holy Cross opened the scoring in the third minute, when senior forward
Evan Jones knocked in a rebound after a long shot by senior midfielder
Jake Williams was saved.
• The Crusaders stayed in front until early in the second half, when Clemson's Tyler Trimnal headed in a cross from Arthur Duquenne in the 52nd minute to tie the score at 1-1.
• Just over two minutes later, James Kelly headed in a Joran Gerbet corner kick to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
• Then in the 89th minute, Kowalski one-timed a pass from freshman midfielder
Thomas Mancuso into the upper left corner of the goal to even up the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• The crowd of 2,573 was the largest in the history of Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
• Clemson finished the game with a 19-8 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
• Senior goalkeeper
Josh Tubbs tied his season high with six saves on the night.
• Jones now has 56 points on 22 goals and 12 assists in his collegiate career, moving into sixth place on the Crusaders' all-time scoring list.
• Mancuso and sophomore midfielder
Kyle Martell both picked up their first career assist on Kowalski's game-tying goal.
