Field hockey opens season with win over Stonehill

WORCESTER, Mass. - Three different Crusaders picked up their first goals of the season in field hockey's 3-1 win over Stonehill on Friday night at the Hart Turf Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior Meggan Fourie opened the scoring for both sides with 1:49 remaining in the opening quarter. Sending a shot on goal off a corner play, fifth year Sarah Potter tipped the save off the Stonehill goalies' pads back to Fourie, who was able to find the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
  • Just nine minutes after the Skyhawks tied the game at 1-1, junior Julia Carrozza tipped a shot from junior Megan Schienbein past the Stonehill goalie for the 2-1 lead.
  • With 4:14 remaining in the contest, freshman Jocelyn Monti collected her first collegiate goal off a tipped pass by sophomore Marissa MacLean to seal the 3-1 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman goalkeeper Mia McCloskey picked up her first collegiate win in her debut for the Crusaders, turning aside three shots.
  • Stonehill held the slight edge in shots, 8-7, while the two teams finished even at six penalty corner opportunities each.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 1 when they welcome LIU to the Hart Turf Field at 11 a.m.
