WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team defeated LIU, 4-3, in overtime, on Sunday morning at the Hart Turf Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• LIU got off to a hot start, netting two goals in the first six minutes of the contest to take a 2-0 lead into the quarter break.
• Senior Meggan Fourie converted on a penalty stroke opportunity 4:30 into the second quarter to cut the Sharks' lead in half.
• With 8:33 remaining in the first half, fifth year Sarah Potter tipped a shot by sophomore Maguire Sturgis past the LIU goalie to knot the game at 2-2 going into halftime.
• LIU regained the lead with 1:52 remaining in the third quarter. A minute later, Fourie tipped a crossing pass by freshman Jocelyn Monti into the corner of the net to knot the game back up at 3-3. Neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter, forcing a 7-on-7 overtime period.
• With 22 seconds remaining in the first overtime, and the Crusaders on a woman-up opportunity, Sturgis' shot found sophomore Saskia Williams on the post for the easy tip-in goal for the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Freshman goalkeeper Mia McCloskey picked up her second win in as many games for the Crusaders, turning aside five shots.
• Holy Cross held the slight edge in penalty corners, 3-2. Each team was awarded a penalty stroke, which only the Crusaders converted on.
• Each team took nine shots, with the Crusaders holding the 9-8 edge on shots on goal.

UP NEXT:

• Holy Cross will travel to Farfield, Conn. on Friday, Sept. 6 to face the NEC's Fairfield University at 4 p.m.
