Marcus Williams all scored goals as the Holy Cross men's soccer team defeated Merrimack 3-0 at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Crusaders improve to 1-1 on the season with the win, while the Warriors fall to 1-1 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• After a scoreless first half, Williams opened up the scoring at the 52:20 mark when he knocked in a rebound from five yards out in the center.
• At the 67:05 mark, Penzone made the score 2-0 when he fired a rocket into the upper right corner of the goal from just outside the top right of the box.
• Jones concluded the scoring on a breakaway at the 84:39 mark, when he beat the goalkeeper one-on-one from 17 yards out.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• Holy Cross finished the game with a 15-9 advantage in shots, while Merrimack held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
• The Crusaders improve to 4-0-1 in home openers over the last five seasons.
• Senior goalkeeper
Josh Tubbs made three saves while picking up his third career shutout.
• Penzone's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
• Jones' goal was the 19th of his Holy Cross career, moving him into a tie for 10th place on the all-time school list.
