HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross got on the board early with a second-inning RBI double by junior center fielder Connor Cooney.
  • The Crusaders erupted for four runs in the third inning. An RBI groundout made it a 2-0 game, and a two-run single by junior shortstop Jimmy King gave the Crusaders a 4-0 advantage. King advanced on a passed ball and then came around to score on a single by junior third baseman Brendan Jones
  • Lehigh got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI single and wild pitch to make it a 5-2 game.
  • Holy Cross held onto the 5-2 lead — aided by 10 strikeouts from sophomore starting pitcher Danny Macchiarola — until the Crusaders tacked on another run in the top of the eighth, when King stole a base and then scored on an error by the catcher to extend the advantage to 6-2.
  • An RBI double and sac fly helped Lehigh cut within 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
  • Sophomore right fielder Jack Toomey led off the ninth with a single up the middle — his fourth hit of the day — and came around to score after a pinch-hit RBI single from freshman John LaFleur
  • The Mountain Hawks cut within 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth, but the Crusaders drew a groundout for the final out to secure the win.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
