HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders got out to an early lead, with a 2-0 advantage after one inning thanks to two sacrifice flies. After a fielder's choice, Holy Cross scored another run to make it 3-0 in the second.
  • A solo home run by junior first baseman Chris Baillargeon extended the Crusader lead to 4-0 by the fourth inning.
  • Lafayette got on the board in the fifth inning, with an RBI groundout making it 4-1.
  • Holy Cross sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth inning, scoring six runs to extend the lead to 10-1.
  • The Leopards responded quickly, with a seven-run bottom of the sixth to cut within 10-8. An RBI single in the seventh made it a 10-9 game. With the Crusaders leading by just one run, sophomore reliever Jake Needham was able to escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
  • Needham pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, and in the top of the ninth, the Crusaders tacked on a pair of insurance runs with a sac fly by senior designated hitter Patrick Casserly and a pinch-hit RBI single by freshman Braden Connors to make it a 12-9 game.

DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross will head to Dartmouth for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 23.
