Men’s hockey defeats AIC in game one of the Atlantic Hockey Semifinals

WORCESTER, Mass. – Men's ice hockey defeated AIC, 5-2, Friday night at the Hart Center Rink in game one of the Atlantic Hockey semifinal round.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • AIC took the 1-0 lead on the power play in the opening minutes of the first period.
  • Senior Alec Cicero tied the game at 1-1 with 7:58 remaining in the opening frame. Stopping an AIC clear from leaving the zone, senior Jake Higgins sent a shot on net that bounced off the pads right onto Cicero's stick for the one-time shot.
  • One minute after killing off a penalty, senior Tyler Ghirardosi gave the Crusaders their first lead of the night. Catching the Yellowjackets in a 3-on-2 situation, freshman Jack Stockfish skated the puck to the goal line before wrapping a pass to Ghirardosi coming down the middle. Hesitating to get the defender to bite, Ghirardosi sent his shot shortside in the limited space between the goaltender and the post.
  • Drawing a crosschecking call with 32 seconds remaining in the frame, junior Liam McLinskey tipped in a shot by senior Matt Guerra to extend the Crusader lead to two with 9.8 seconds remaining in the period.
  • AIC cut the lead to 3-2 with the lone goal of the second period.
  • Both sides were quiet for the start of the third period, with each goaltender making massive saves. With 3:30 remaining in the frame, AIC pulled their netminder in favor of the extra attacker.
  • McLinskey netted his second goal of the game with 1:36 remaining, extending the Crusader lead to 4-2. Grabbing a loose puck in the defensive zone, McLinskey skated the puck to the offensive blue line before sending a wrist shot into the empty net.
  • Returning to the net for the ensuing faceoff, AIC pulled their netminder again, before Cicero picked up his second goal of the game with 38 seconds remaining. Senior Jake Higgins grabbed the puck at the goal line, sending a stretch pass to Cicero waiting at the offensive blue line. Cicero collected the pass and sent a backhand shot into the empty net.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior Jason Grande recorded 22 saves in the win, while AIC's Nils Wallstrom made 18 in the loss.
  • Both teams went 1-for-4 on the power play, with each team scoring their extra-attacker goals in the first period.
  • Both teams won 33 faceoffs.
