WORCESTER, Mass.—Holy Cross names three to the Indoor Track and Field Academic All-Patriot League Team, as announced by the Patriot League on Friday morning. Seniors Mike Mazzocca and Chris Barone as well as junior Brian Fennelly were all selected for this honor.
Barone, a computer science major, earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.56 concluding the fall of his senior year. He competed in four meets this season and finished the season at the Patriot League Championship. Barone had a qualifying time of 6.93 in the 60m dash preliminary round for seventh place and took seventh in the finals with a 7.04 time. This is the first time Barone has received this honor.
Fennelly, a chemistry major, earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.83 concluding the fall of his junior year. He competed in five meets this season breaking the school record in the heptathlon twice this year. Fennelly broke the record first at the Husky Challenge hosted by UConn, in his debut as a multi, with a total of 4,789 points to claim second place overall in the event. The record was previously set by Alexander Escada (4,629 points) on Feb. 2, 2019. He set personal bests in all seven events. At the Patriot League Championship he broke his own record with a total of 4,903 points to claim fourth place overall, earning personal bests in five of the seven events. Fennelly also competed in the 60m hurdles where he took fifth in the preliminary round with a personal best time of 8.17 and came in sixth in the finals with a time of 8.25. Fennelly earns his second time receiving this honor.
Mazzocca, a biology major, earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.38 concluding the fall of his senior year. He competed in five meets this season breaking the school record in the 60m hurdles three times this year. Mazzocca previously set the record on Feb. 12, 2022 with a time of 8.02. At the Alden Invitational hosted by Brown he ran a 7.98 in the preliminary heat to claim first place to break the record. At the Patriot League Championship he broke the record again on day one of competition with a second place prelim time of 7.96. He broke it again in the finals on the final day of the meet with a time of 7.93 to take the silver medal. This is the first time Mazzocca has received this honor in the indoor season.
All three athletes work with the track and field teams on community service projects. This past fall the team volunteered at a charity 5k which was sponsored by ?the Community Harvest Project, a nonprofit farm that grows food to donate to those in need.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in their sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
