WORCESTER, Mass. — Men's lacrosse team fell, 12-6, to Providence College on Sunday, Feb. 4 at Kuzniewski Field.
Sophomore midfielder
William Stahl led the way for the Crusaders (0-1, 0-0 PL) with two goals and an assist, followed closely by senior
Matt Major, who netted two of his own. Senior netminder
Dawson Friers recorded eight saves on the day.
Providence (1-0, 0-0 Big East) was led by Ryan Bell, who scored five goals and recorded two assists, and Jack Horrigan, who posted four goals and an assist. Goaltender James Corasaniti made 13 saves in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Providence opened the game with a 6-0 scoring run.
- Freshman Luca Ward scored his first collegiate goal with 4:43 remaining in the opening quarter, outrunning his defender before depositing the ball over the Friars' netminders shoulder.
- Providence scored one more goal before the end of the first quarter, and another to open the second quarter.
- Senior attackman Matt Major picked up his first goal of the season at the 11:49 mark of the second quarter to bring the score to 6-2. Left alone five yards from the net, Major received the pass from sophomore Tyler Marmo, unleashing the quick shot before the netminder could react.
- Providence scored two goals before freshman Ryan Botek picked up his first collegiate goal with 43 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Creating a lane by beating his defender in the foot race, Botek unleashed a shot from ten yards out that went into the far corner.
- The third and fourth quarter were quieter for both sides, with the two sides trading goals in the third, finishing the frame with a 2-2 score. Sophomore William Stahl picked up an unassisted score with 11:31 remaining in the frame. Senior Matt Major scored his second goal of the game on the man-up advantage with 2:32 remaining.
- Stahl picked up his second goal of the game with 7:54 remaining in the final frame, which proved to be the only goal of the quarter.
