WORCESTER, Mass.- The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team will take a trip to the city for the first round of the Hockey East tournament at #7 Boston University (BU) on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena. Fans can watch the broadcast on NESN.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (7-21-3, 4-18-3 Hockey East):
- The 10th seeded Crusaders concluded the 2023-24 regular season with a final weekend of games against Maine at home. The Black Bears swept the weekend taking a close 3-2 overtime win on Friday, Feb. 23 and a 5-2 win on Saturday, Feb. 24 over Holy Cross.
- In game one, the Crusaders fired the first shot with a power-play goal scored by sophomore forward Charlotte Sonntag at 9:36 in the opening frame on her own. With five minutes left in the first period Maine notched a goal to set the game at 1-1. Holy Cross entered the second period with a goal by sophomore forward Alexia Moreau at 6:09 assisted by forwards, sophomore Lane Lewis and senior Bryn Saarela. The Black Bears answered with the equalizer with less than two minutes left in the second. After a scoreless third period, the competition was forced into overtime where Maine netted the game winner just 36 seconds into OT for the 3-2 win.
- In game two, Holy Cross got on the board midway through the first period with a putback goal scored by junior forward Madison Michals at 11:08. She was assisted by Lewis and Moreau. Less than five minutes later and sophomore defenseman Taylor Cantelon scored her first collegiate goal right off the faceoff taken by freshman forward Emily Crovo. Maine answered back with a goal of their own just before the period ended. In the second period the Black Bears notched three goals to put themselves ahead with a two goal lead. Maine tacked on one last goal in the third period for the 5-2 win.
- Senior forward Millie Sirum continues to lead the charge for Holy Cross as the leading scorer with 11 goals this season. She is tied with Moreau and Saarela for the most assists with 10. Sirum still holds the most points of any Crusader with 21. Junior defensemen Emma Min, Emilie Fortunato and Carmen Elliott led the Crusaders defense in blocked shots. Min has made 54 blocks, the most of the team, followed by Fortunato with 44 and Elliott with 41.
- Sophomore goalie Abby Hornung made her first collegiate start in net for the Crusaders in game one against Maine making a total of 41 saves in the outing, a career high. She has appeared in two games this season and owns a 2.95 goals against average with a .925 save percentage.
- Senior goalie Madison Beck was in between the pipes for game two making 29 saves for a 2.77 goals against average and a .908 save percentage this season.
TIPS ON THE TERRIERS (14-17-3, 12-14-1 Hockey East):
- Seventh seeded Boston University (BU) concluded the 2022-23 season with a final weekend matchup with No. 11 UConn. The nationally ranked Huskies swept the weekend with a 4-0 win on Friday, Feb. 23 and a close 1-0 win on Feb. 24 over the Terriers.
- In game one, the Huskies netted a goal with 18 seconds left in the first period. They continued with the momentum in the second period with an early goal just two minutes into play. UConn notched two more goals in the third period for the 4-0 win over the Terriers.
- In game two, BU held the Huskies scoreless after the opening frame but UConn entered the second period on the powerplay and converted for the one goal lead. Despite a battle from the Terriers, UConn maintained their lead until the final horn for the 1-0 win.
- Martin is currently the Terriers leading scorer with 14 goals on the season and holds the most points of any BU skater with 27. Graduate defenseman Nadia Mativi has the most assists on the year with 14 and leads the defense with 34 blocks.
- Junior goalie Callie Shanahan was in goal for both games on the weekend for the Terriers. She made 26 saves in game one and 22 saves in game two for a 2.60 goals against average and a .897 save percentage on the year.
LAST TIME THEY MET:
- Holy Cross and BU met earlier this year with the Crusaders last hosting the Terriers for their final matchup of the regular season. Holy Cross took a 3-2 win over BU on Jan. 27 with two goals, including the game winner coming from freshman forward Emily Crovo. The Crusaders are on an all-time two game win streak.
- The Crusaders hold a 6-11-0 all-time series and 5-10-0 all-time conference record against the Terriers.
