Men’s lacrosse falls short at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. — The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell at Dartmouth, 14-8, on Saturday at Scully-Fahey Field.

Sophomore Tyler Marmo led the way for the Crusaders (2-2, 0-0 PL) with two goals, while fellow sophomores William Stahl and Will Messineo recorded multi-point efforts with a goal and assist each.

Dartmouth (1-1, 0-0 Ivy) was led by Colin McGill, who posted five goals, and Hopper Zappitello, who netted two goals and picked up six assists for a game-high eight points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first quarter was all Dartmouth as the Big Green netted five unanswered goals.
  • Working the ball around the offensive zone in the second quarter, freshman Ryan Botek capped off the extended possession with his third goal of the season.
  • Dartmouth responded by scoring two goals of their own.
  • Sophomore Tyler Marmo netted his third of the season on the man-up opportunity. Faking a shot, sophomore William Stahl instead passed to Marmo who found himself wide open on the post. Marmo took three steps in front of the net before firing the ball in past the Dartmouth netminder.
  • Marmo picked up his second of the quarter with 2:39 remaining. Running through three defenders, Marmo sent a sidearm shot right between the Dartmouth netminder's legs.
  • Dartmouth opened the third quarter with a goal before senior Matt Major found the back of the net in response. Forcing a turnover, freshman defender Cooper Fallon picked up the loose ball, running to the 30-yard line, before sending a pass to Major for the quick goal off the transition.
  • Stahl picked up a goal of his own with 3:33 remaining in the third to cut the Dartmouth lead down to four. Outrunning his defender, Stahl released a shot into the top of the opposite corner of the net.
  • Dartmouth picked up two more before the end of the quarter.
  • Junior Owen Larson picked up his first collegiate goal with a missile of a shot from 20 yards out. Fallon sent a pass to Larson who let the shot go, blasting the ball past the netminder.
  • Junior John Mitchell netted his first goal of the season in the fourth quarter. Receiving a pass from sophomore Will Messineo in almost the same spot as Larson's goal, Mitchell caught the pass and quickly shot it into the net.
  • Messineo picked up a goal of his own shortly after on the man-up advantage to cut the Dartmouth lead to three with eight minutes remaining. Dodging two defenders, Messineo's bounce shot found its way between the goalkeepers' legs.
  • Dartmouth extended their lead back to six with three goals over the last six minutes.
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Junior JR Long came into the net in relief halfway through the second quarter for the Crusaders, making seven saves. Dartmouth's Ryan Williamson recorded 15 saves.
  • Senior Connor DePeiro went 8-13 at the X with four ground ball pickups in his season debut.
UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will travel to Bucknell to open their Patriot League schedule next Saturday, March 2.
  • Game time is set for 12 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pa.
