WORCESTER, Mass – Junior guard
Simone Foreman matched a career-high with 21 points as the Holy Cross women's basketball team earned a wire-to-wire 73-56 win against nonconference opponent Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon in the Hart Center Arena.
Foreman was one of four Crusader (5-4) starters in double-figures. She was 8-of-19 (42.1%) from the field to go with five boards, two assists and a steal. 15 of her 21 markers came in the second half. Classmate
Meg Cahalan dropped 18 points with four rebounds and two threes. Senior
Lindsay Berger had 14 points with six rebounds while junior
Kaitlyn Flanagan was two assists shy of a double-double (10 points, eight assists).
For Stony Brook (3-5), Shamarla King produced a team-high 18 points with eight boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross opened the contest with seven straight markers getting a junior Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly wing triple at the 8:03 mark. Donnelly dished to Cahalan for a mid-range jumper at the foul line which opened up a 10 point, 17-7 edge. Stony Brook got the last points of the stanza to trail 18-9 through one.
- Berger drove through traffic from the free throw line for an easy bucket to regain the 11 point edge, 24-13. Flanagan found Cahalan on a pick and roll for a three-ball to expand the margin to 27-15. Seven in a row from Stony Brook made it a two possession game, 27-22 with 3:14 left until half. From there, Holy Cross closed the half on a 10-2 run to lead 37-24.
- Holy Cross increased the lead 57-42 after three periods as Foreman had 11 of the Crusaders' 20 points coming out of the break.
- Stony Brook started the fourth outproducing the Crusaders 7-to-3 to make it a 11 point deficit, 60-49. A Seawolf lay-in with 3:57 left dropped the margin to 10, 66-56. Holy Cross would score the final seven points of the match.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Holy Cross shot 52.2% (12-of-23) in the second half.
- Flanagan's eight assists was a season-high.
- Dating back to her freshman year, Flanagan has totaled four or more assists 38 times and the Crusaders are 28-10 (.737) in those games.
- Donnelly dished out a campaign-best five assists.
