WORCESTER, Mass – Junior
Simone Foreman posted a career-high 23 points as the Holy Cross women's basketball team earned a 66-49 win against nonconference foe Marist on Worcester Schools Day presented by Pepsi.
The Crusaders (6-4) have won three of their last four games and picked up their second straight wire-to-wire win leading by as many as 26 points in the second quarter.
Foreman was one of four players in double-figures for Holy Cross. Classmate
Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly tallied her second career double-double finishing with 10 points, a game-best 12 rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Senior
Lindsay Berger also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. Junior
Kaitlyn Flanagan tallied 13 points, four assists and two steals.
For Marist (5-5), Morgan Lee led the way with 13 points going 9-of-10 (90%) at the line.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A Berger bucket and Foreman triple built an early 5-0 lead for the Crusaders. Foreman converted a hoop and harm to extend the lead to 10-4 at the media stoppage. Donnelly dished to Foreman for her 10th point of the period as the Crusaders led by 15, 19-4. Marist halted the 12-0 Crusader run making it 19-6 through one.
- Holy Cross got four points on one possession as Foreman drove for an and1 but missed the free throw, Berger corralled the loose ball and Flanagan canned a mid-range jumper making it 24-6 Crusaders. Flanagan converted an and1 upping the margin to 26, 39-13. Marist notched the final six points to trail by 20 at the break.
- Marist began the third outscoring the Crusaders 9-to-6 dropping their deficit to 45-28 with 4:50 left in the third. They came within 16, 46-30 with two minutes left in the third. Foreman rolled in a layup at the buzzer to reestablish the 20 point edge.
- The Red Foxes outscored the Crusaders 17-7 through the opening 7:55 of the fourth to trim the deficit to 10, 57-47 as that was the closest they would come.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- 10 of Foreman's 23 points came in the first quarter.
- Holy Cross held Marist to 2-of-23 (8.7%) efficiency from deep.
- The Crusaders dominated the glass outrebounding the opponents 39-to-22.
- The double-double was the first of the season for Berger and the seventh of her career.
- Holy Cross improved to 4-0 (1.000) this season when Foreman scores 20 or more points.
- Foreman scored her 500th career point in the contest.
