12 Crusaders record points in men’s ice hockey’s win over Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team prevailed over Army Friday night, taking the matchup by a score of 5-3 at Tate Rink.

With the win, Holy Cross improves to 5-8-1 (4-4-1 AHA), while Army moves to 5-7-0 (5-6-0 AHA) with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Devin Phillips opened the scoring for both sides, finding the back of the net with 24 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Forcing a turnover at the defensive blue line, senior Nic Petruolo poked the puck to junior Matt DeBoer, who sent a cross-ice pass to Phillips. Phillips, on the breakaway, carried the puck to the faceoff dot before unleashing a wrist shot into the top corner of the net.
  • Army tied the game at 1-1 with 4:03 remaining in the second period.
  • After his first goal was called back for offsides, senior John Gelatt struck again with 1:01 remaining in the middle frame to pick up his first goal of the season. Finding the puck in the crease following a one-timer by senior Matt Shatsky, Gelatt pushed the puck the rest of the way into the net.
  • Junior Joe Solimine picked up his first goal of the season at the 16:42 mark of the third period to give the Crusaders the 3-1 lead. Collecting the rebound off a shot by Gelatt, Solimine redirected the puck into the Army net for the score.
  • Freshman Owen Kim extended the Holy Cross lead to 4-1 with 11:11 left to play in regulation. Keeping the puck in the zone, Petruolo found sophomore Ty Gagno along the boards for a shot on net, where Kim was able to pop the rebound over the Army netminder for the score.
  • Army cut the lead to 4-3, netting goals at the 6:57 and 4:26 marks of the third period.
  • Army pulled their netminder with 1:53 remaining in favor of the extra skater. Forcing a turnover at the blue line, senior Liam McLinskey chased down the free puck and fired it into the empty net to give the Crusaders the 5-3 lead with 1:01 to play.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior Thomas Gale recorded 19 saves in the win.
  • McLinskey extended his NCAA-leading goal streak to five games with his empty net strike at the end of the game.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will return home to welcome Sacred Heart to the Hart Center Rink for a two-game set on Friday, Nov. 29 and Saturday, Nov. 30. Both games are set for 7 p.m.
