WORCESTER, Mass. — Freshman forward
Aidan Richard posted a career-high 18 points and five rebounds, to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to an 88-49 victory over Mitchell at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders improve to 4-2 on the year with the victory, while the Mariners fall to 4-1 overall.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• Holy Cross made 62.1 percent of its field goal attempts on the night, while posting a 38-24 rebounding advantage.
• The Crusaders also held Mitchell to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor, including 23.8 percent from three-point range.
• Senior forward
Caleb Kenney scored 16 points on eight of nine shooting from the floor, while freshman guard
Max Green chipped in with 14 points.
• Sophomore guard
Joe Nugent (11 points) and sophomore forward
Declan Ryan (10 points) also scored in double figures.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Holy Cross found a rhythm within the first few minutes of the game and took an early lead. The Crusaders led 22-8 within the first 7:07 of the game, with Nugent scoring half of Holy Cross' points in that span.Â
• Richard and sophomore guard
DeAndre Williams had back-to-back layups to give the Crusaders a 26-8 lead before a turnaround jumper brought Mitchell within 26-10.Â
• The Holy Cross lead grew to 20 after Kenney's breakaway steal left him with a wide open court, and his dunk put the Crusaders ahead 34-14 with 8:46 left in the half.
• The Crusaders' advantage grew as high as 32 in the first half, with Kenney's turnaround giving Holy Cross a 55-23 lead with 50 seconds remaining and capping a 19-6 run.Â
• Mitchell took the court strong at the beginning of the second half, cutting within 24 points after a 7-2 run to start the frame. Holy Cross responded with seven unanswered points, and rebuilt a 30-point advantage.Â
• Back-to-back dunks from Green put the Crusaders ahead by 35, 74-39, with 9:38 left in the game.
• Mitchell could not cut any closer than within 33 points for the remainder of the game, as the Crusader lead grew to 39 after a layup from junior guard
Ben Capron with 2:03 to go.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
• Holy Cross has now won four straight games, its longest winning streak since the 2018-2019 season.
