Volleyball’s Lane records 800th career kill against Army West Point

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross volleyball senior Abbie Lane posted her 800th career kill on Saturday against Patriot League opponent Army West Point in Coach George Blaney '61 Gymnasium. The Crusaders were upended by a 3-0 score in the contest.

Lane became the eighth Crusader in program history to reach 800th kills. She finished the match with a contest-best 12 kills and needs nine more to reach seventh place on the program's all-time list.

The defeat was the 19th overall for Holy Cross and 12th in conference action. Army West Point levels their record at 11-11 with the win and moves to 7-6 PL.

SET SCORES:
Black Knights 3, Crusaders 0 (21-25, 17-25, 21-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Army doubled up the Crusaders 6-3 getting three straight kills. This was the start of an 8-1 Army run for the 11-4 lead forcing Holy Cross into an early timeout. Following the stoppage, Holy Cross went on a 5-1 burst with sophomore Emma Halstead notching back-to-back aces to trail 12-9. A freshman Gabby Wold kill coupled with an Army attack error pulled with Crusaders within two, 17-15. Sophomore Maeve Bailey put her team down one 21-20, however, the Black Knights closed the set on a 4-1 spurt.
  • An Army service miscue gave the hosts the lead 3-2. A 11-2 Black Knight outburst increased their edge to 13-5. Holy Cross responded with a 6-2 mini run of their own with Lane producing three kills dropping the deficit to 16-13. The guests took the set by a 25-17 score.
  • Freshman Lily Torrence set up senior Lauren Halverson on the right side for a kill as Holy Cross moved ahead 4-3. Army eventually built a 19-11 advantage. The Crusaders did not give up outscoring their opponents 7-2 on the ensuing serves with freshman Winn Godier chipping in three kills as Holy Cross cut the margin to 21-18 until Army won the set 25-21.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • Torrence had her third double-double of the season with a personal and game-high 25 assists with a career-high matching 11 digs.
  • Godier established new career-bests in kills (eight) and hitting percentage (.667) in the match.
