Men’s ice hockey skates to tie with Niagara

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team tied Niagara, 3-3, on Friday night at Dwyer Arena.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Devin Phillips got the Crusaders on the board seven minutes into the first period. Picking up a dump into the zone by senior Nic Petruolo, junior Timothy Heinke skated to the far wall, taking three defenders with him, before sending a shot on net that Phillips was able to redirect past the Purple Eagles netminder.
  • Senior Liam McLinskey extended the lead to 2-0 at the 3:03 mark of the opening period carrying the puck from the defensive zone and cutting through the Niagara defense before sending the puck into the roof of the net for the score.
  • Niagara struck three times in the second period to take the 3-2 lead in the middle frame. The Purple Eagles scored on one of their five power play opportunities and twice even strength.
  • Heinke picked up a goal of his own with 12:44 remaining in the third period to tie the game at 3-3, sending a one-timer past the Niagara netminder.
  • Neither team was able to score in overtime, rendering the game a tie. Niagara earned the extra point in the Atlantic Hockey standings by taking the shootout, 1-0.
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior Thomas Gale recorded 35 saves in the contest, which ties for his season high.
  • The matchup marked the 100th career game for senior defenseman Nic Petruolo. A transfer from Union, Petruolo made his collegiate debut on Oct. 19, 2021 at New Hampshire with the Garnet Chargers.

  • The two teams will face off again tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m.
