Women’s hockey open conference schedule against Boston College

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team will play a home-away series against Boston College on Thursday, Oct. 10, and Saturday, Oct. 12. The Crusaders will host the Eagles in their conference opener, Homecoming and Mental Health Awareness game at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Hart Center Rink. Boston College has a 2 p.m. puck drop set for game two at Conte Forum. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+. 

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (3-1-0, 0-0-0 Hockey East): 

  • The Crusaders swept the weekend series over St. Anselm. They took game one 5-1 at home and game two 3-2 away.
  • In game one, freshman forward Amanda Aslan netted her first career goal at 12:55 in the first period to give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead.
  • In the second period, Holy Cross extended its lead with a late goal by sophomore assistant captain Emily Crovo at 17:53. The Hawks responded with a Brenna Young goal to cut the Crusaders lead in half at 18:41.
  • In the third period, the Crusaders tallied three more goals within five minutes of each other (by Crovo and sophomore forwards Abby Garvin and Lulu Rourke) to secure a dominant 5-1 victory in their home opener.
  • Holy Cross broke the all-time Division I shots on goal record with 61 in the game.
  • In game two, neither team scored in the first period.
  • The Crusaders got on the board early in the second period with a solo goal by junior forward Lane Lewis at 1:33. Not long after, junior assistant captain Alexia Moreau extended the lead with a goal at 7:49. Freshman defender Kaitlin Sullivan assisted Moreau for her first career point. The Hawks cut the lead in half scoring at 10:56 netted by Tyra Turner.
  • In the third period, St. Anselm tied the game 2-2 with a goal by Brooklyn Schneiderhan at 8:05. The Crusaders responded with redshirt-freshman defender Kenzee Hope firing in a shot that sophomore forward Reghan Chadwick deflected into the back of the net for the game-winning goal. Senior defender Emilie Fortunato set the play in motion, setting Hope up for the shot, and giving both credit for assists.
  • Junior assistant captain and goalie Brooke Loranger was between the pipes for game one. She earned the win and made 23 saves. Junior goalie Abby Hornung was in net for game two earning her first career win and making 27 saves. Loranger now has a 1.69 goals against with a .922 save percentage and Hornung is averaging 2.00 goals against with a .931 save percentage.

EYES ON THE EAGLES (1-2-0, 0-0-0 HE):

  • The Eagles ended the 2023-24 campaign with a 15-14-7 overall record and a 13-9-5 conference record. Boston College concluded the season in the semifinals of the Hockey East Tournament, losing 2-1 in overtime to No.1/#1-seeded UConn on March 6.
  • Ahead of the 2024-25 season, Boston College was tabbed to finish third in Hockey East according to the Preseason Coaches Poll. The Eagles were predicted to finish behind UConn and Northeastern. The Eagles return their lead point scorer, two players with more than 100 faceoff wins, and their starting goalie.
  • The Eagles started the season with a 1-2 record. Most recently Boston College hosted No. 1 Wisconsin for a home series dropping both games on the weekend. Game one ended in a 7-1 loss and game two concluded with a 7-0 result.
  • Senior forward Abby Newhook scored the lone Eagles goal on the weekend in the third period of game one.
  • Junior goalie Grace Campbell started in net for game one of the series making 36 saves. Sophomore netminder Bailey Callaway stepped in for game two making 54 saves in her first career start.

LAST TIME THEY MET:

  • Holy Cross and Boston College met last season. The then-No. 13-ranked Eagles hosted the Crusaders in the final game of the season series on Jan. 12. Boston College won 5-0.
  • The Crusaders hold a 0-16-1 all-time and conference series record against the Eagles.
