Fourie records first career hat trick in field hockey's win over Rider

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team defeated Rider, 4-2, on its alumni day on Sunday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior Meggan Fourie opened the scoring for the Crusaders (5-6), sending a perfectly placed drag flick past the Rider goalkeeper on a corner play just under seven minutes into the first quarter. Junior Julia Carrozza and sophomore Marissa MacLean were credited with the assists on the play.
  • Rider tied the game on a penalty corner goal of their own just under five minutes into the second quarter. The tie would not last, as Fourie picked up her second goal of the game with 27 seconds remaining in the half. Fourie carried the ball 50 yards before pulling around two Bronc defenders and drawing the goalkeeper out of the cage for the easy lift into the open net.
  • Just under nine minutes into the second half, sophomore Maguire Sturgis picked up her second goal of the season, sending a pass across the mouth of the goal that found its way over the goal line.
  • Rider cut the lead to 3-2 on a penalty corner goal with just under six minutes to go.
  • With 1:40 remaining in regulation, Fourie picked up her third goal of the game to secure her first collegiate hat trick. Fourie forced a turnover just in front of the net and dribbled the ball into space, forcing the Rider goalkeeper to stack her pads, allowing for the lift over into the back of the net.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman goalkeeper Mia McCloskey turned aside a 11 shots in the matchup, marking her fourth game this season with double digit saves. McCloskey's 89 saves and 8.09 saves per game this season tops the Patriot League.
  • Senior Grace Donahue picked up her third defensive save of the season in the contest, while Fourie recorded the first one of her career.
  • Fourie's 11 goals, 2.82 shots on goal per game, and 23 points all top the Patriot League.
