Volleyball drops conference contest to Army West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Holy Cross volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback to Patriot League foe Army West Point Saturday afternoon in the Gills Field House.

The Black Knights improve to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League while the Crusaders drop their 13th contest of the year and sixth in conference action.

Freshman outside hitter Gabby Wold posted a team-best 10 kills in the contest giving her eight double-digit kill contests this season.

SET SCORES:
Black Knights 3, Crusaders 0 (21-25, 16-25, 20-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Freshman setter Lily Torrence placed an ace to increase the Crusader lead to 5-3. Seven in a row by Army doubled up the score at 10-5. Holy Cross countered with three straight of their own to pull within two, 10-8. Senior outside hitter Abbie Lane powered up from the outside keeping the deficit two, 15-13. Trailing by four, the Crusaders used a 4-1 burst getting a Lane ace to make it an 18-17 set in favor of Army. The Black Knights closed the set to take the 1-0 contest edge.
  • A freshman middle blocker Winn Godier and senior right side Lauren Halverson block at the left pin leveled the margin at 4-4. From there Army expanded the lead to 13-6 thanks to a 9-2 scoring run. Godier and Lane combined for a dual block trimming the deficit to 18-13. Army won the second set following a Crusader attack error.
  • The third set went back and forth. A Lane kill deadlocked the score at 10-10 starting a 4-0 run which ended on a sophomore libero Emma Halstead ace for the 13-10 lead. An Army attack error increased the Holy Cross advantage to 17-12. The Black Knights completed the victory getting a 13-3 outburst late for the win.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • Halstead manufactured a contest-best 15 digs. She was 4-for-4 on receptions giving her six games with a perfect reception percentage this season.
  • Torrence produced a game-high two aces making it the second time this season she's recorded two aces in a match.
  • Lane (748) needs eight more kills to pass Crusader head coach Kathleen Colpoys (755) for ninth place on the program's all-time list.
