Volleyball defeated by Navy Friday night

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross volleyball team was defeated 3-0 by Patriot League opponent Navy Friday evening in Blaney Gymnasium.

The loss was the 14th overall on the campaign for the Crusaders and seventh in conference action while the Midshipmen move to 2-14, 2-5 PL.

Freshman outside hitter Gabby Wold was one dig shy of a double-double effort recording a team-best 11 kills in the match to go with nine digs and a career-high matching three aces.

Senior outside hitter Abbie Lane tied Crusader head coach Kathleen Colpoys for ninth place on the program's career kill list (755). Lane finished the match with seven kills and eight digs.

SET SCORES:
Midshipmen 3, Crusaders 0 (23-25, 16-25, 20-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Trailing by two in the opening set, the Crusaders used a 5-1 burst to take a 15-13 lead at the media timeout. Behind 19-18, Navy outscored the Crusaders 4-1 to push ahead 22-20 late forcing Holy Cross into a timeout. Navy scored again increasing their run and putting them two points away from taking the set. The Crusaders came within one on sophomore libero Emma Halstead's ace at 24-23, but Navy captured the set on the next point.
  • A Lane kill early in the second set had the Crusaders on top 3-1. With the set deadlocked at 7-7, the guests jumped ahead 12-8 as Holy Cross used a timeout. Their run expanded to 9-1 as they led 16-9. The closest Holy Cross came was 22-16 as Navy scored the next three points for the 2-0 match lead.
  • Holy Cross manufactured a one point lead early in the first set at 6-5. Ahead 11-10, Navy notched five in a row leading 16-10. The Crusaders countered with another Lane kill dropping the margin to 16-13. Senior middle blocker Lauren Halverson and sophomore middle blocker Maeve Bailey teamed up for a block making it 20-18 Navy. The Mids won the final set 25-20.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • Halstead produced double-digit digs for the 11th time this season.
  • Halverson has four or more blocks six times in 2024.
UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross travels away from campus on Sunday to square off against league foe Lehigh.
  • First serve is set for 2 p.m.
