BALTIMORE – Holy Cross volleyball senior outside hitter
Abbie Lane moved up another slot on the program's all-time kill list at Loyola (Md.) on Saturday. The Crusaders fell 3-0 to the host Greyhounds during Patriot League action in Reitz Arena.
Lane passed Katie Snell (790, 1999-2002) in the first set for eighth place on the program's all-time kills list. Lane has 797 career kills, and needs three more to become the eighth student-athlete with 800 or more kills in team history. She finished the match with a squad-high nine kills and added eight digs.
The defeat was the 18th on the year for Holy Cross and 11th in conference action while Loyola improved to 7-13, 5-6 PL.
SET SCORES:
Greyhounds 3, Crusaders 0 (17-25, 13-25, 23-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Sophomore middle Maeve Bailey and freshman middle Lacey Murphy skied up for a block to tie the first set 6-6. An 8-1 run from the host Greyhounds doubled up the score 14-7. Lane's fourth kill of the stanza made it 15-11 Loyola. Three straight from the hosts put them a point away from taking the set. Lane's fifth kill of the set put her team down 24-17 until the Greyhounds clinched the set.
- Holding a one point edge, Loyola strung together six consecutive points, part of a 11-1 scoring burst for the 16-5 advantage. Four straight from the Crusaders including a sophomore libero Emma Halstead ace trimmed the deficit to 16-9. Back-to-back Loyola kills grew the margin to 11, 21-10 as they took a 2-0 match lead.
- Freshman setter Lily Torrence placed a skip set kill and set up sophomore outside hitter Lily Eigner to level the third set early 5-5. Bailey powered through a block to again tie the set 8-8. Another Loyola run (6-1) established a 14-9 lead. Freshman middle Winn Godier began stretch or four straight Crusader points and an 8-2 run giving Holy Cross the lead 17-16. Loyola used a kill, ace and attack error to regain the advantage 19-17. Following a Crusader stoppage, Eigner recorded a kill part of three straight for Holy Cross putting them back in front 20-19. A massive solo stuff in the middle by Torrence with an attack miscue put Holy Cross ahead 23-21. Loyola posted the final four points to complete the straight set victory.
