Volleyball falls to American on Friday night

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Holy Cross volleyball team traveled to Washington D.C. to play Patriot League opponent American Friday evening falling 3-0 in Bender Arena.

The defeat was the 17th on the season for the Crusaders and 10th in league play while the Eagles move to 18-4, 8-2 PL.

SET SCORES:
Eagles 3, Crusaders 0 (17-25, 15-25, 17-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • American built a six point lead 13-7 forcing the Crusaders into a timeout. Two more markers increased their run to 5-0 and lead to 15-7. Trailing 19-10, freshman setter Lily Torrence started a stretch of six straight Crusader points sneaking home a kill dropping the deficit to 19-16. American eventually won the set on the strength of a 6-1 burst.
  • A sophomore middle blocker Maeve Bailey kill put Holy Cross behind 8-6 in the early stages of the second set. Senior captain Rian Millership put her team within one at 15-14 receiving a set from classmate Sarah Stokes for a kill. The Eagles used a 10-1 outburst for the set win.  
  • Knotted up at 4-4, American posted five in a row for the 9-4 advantage. Torrence set up senior middle Lauren Halverson for a kill pulling the Crusaders within 12-9. A Stokes ace put Holy Cross down one, 16-15. American completed the sweep going on a 9-2 run.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • Senior outside hitter Abbie Lane recorded a team-high six kills (788 career) and needs three more to pass Katie Snell (790, 1999-2002) to move into eighth place on the program's all-time list.
  • Torrence led the team with 10 assists, her seventh contest with double-digit dimes this season.
  • Sophomore libero Emma Halstead paced all players with 13 digs, her fifth straight match with double-digit digs.

  • Holy Cross is back on the court Saturday, October 26 at Loyola (Md.)
