Volleyball’s Lane passes head coach Colpoys on all-time kill list at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Holy Cross volleyball senior outside hitter Abbie Lane climbed to ninth place on the program's all-time kill list Sunday afternoon at Lehigh. The Crusaders were upended 3-1 by the host Mountain Hawks in Patriot League action.

The setback was the 15th of the campaign for and eighth in league play for Holy Cross while Lehigh improves 11-7, 4-4 PL.

Lane passed current Crusader head coach Kathleen Colpoys for sole possession of ninth place in the first set connecting on a swing from the outside. Lane finished the match with 12 kills, a contest-best 19 digs and has 767 kills in her collegiate career.

Freshman outside hitter Gabby Wold totaled a game and matched a career-high with 16 kills to go with 14 digs with an assist as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Lehigh built up a 10-2 lead early in the opening set. Lane's first kill of the match kicked off a 9-1 Crusader burst to give them a 13-12 edge. The Mountain Hawks regained the lead at 16-14 until another Holy Cross scoring stretch with Wold tallying a pair of kills moved Holy Cross ahead 19-16. The Mountain Hawks trimmed their deficit to one, 22-21 however, a block from senior Lauren Halverson and freshman Winn Godier, a Lane kill clinched the 25-21 first set win.
  • Four of the first five points in the second set were Crusader kills as they jumped in front 5-1. Lehigh took their first lead at 11-10. Trailing by two 16-14, the Mountain Hawks outscored the Crusaders 11-6 the rest of the way to knot up the match 1-1.
  • Wold built up a 5-3 advantage with back-to-back kills in the third stanza. A Sarah Stokes ace coupled with an attack error moved the guests' lead to three, 12-9. The Mountain Hawks took control of the set on the strength of a 10-1 run for the 19-13 margin. A trio of Lehigh attack errors moved the Crusaders within four, 21-17. Lehigh got those points back for the 25-17 third set win.
  • Wold again put her team in the lead early at 4-3. Seven straight from Lehigh gave them the 10-4 score. A kill in the middle of the set doubled up the margin at 16-8. They moved ahead 22-9 before taking the match.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • Next up for Lane on the all-time list is Katie Snell (1999-2002) who is eighth with 790 kills.
  • Sophomore libero Emma Halstead has double-digit digs in three straight matches.
  • Stokes established a new career-high with four aces.
  • Wold's double-double was her sixth of the season.
