Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Special teams shine in men's ice hockey's win over Connecticut

WORCESTER, Mass. – Men's ice hockey defeated UConn, 4-3, in a back-and-forth matchup Friday night at the Hart Center Rink in its home opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • UConn took the 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the first period. The goal would stand as the lone score in the period.
  • Drawing a penalty just eight seconds into the second period, junior Matt DeBoer buried the tying goal 51 seconds into the period. Forcing the defense to move, junior Mack Oliphant and senior Liam McLinskey passed the puck back and forth at the blue line before McLinskey found a clean lane to an unmarked DeBoer in the corner. DeBoer collected the puck before sending a wrist shot into the top corner of the net for the tie.
  • Eight minutes later, on another power play opportunity, freshman Owen Kim netted his first collegiate goal to give the Crusaders the 2-1 lead. Senior Matt Shatsky sent a pass to junior Timothy Heinke, who drew the defender to him, before passing to an open Kim in the middle of the ice for the one-time shot.
  • UConn tied the game at 2-2 just over a minute later.
  • Holy Cross headed out on the power play nine minutes into the third period, before UConn was called for a second penalty just 50 seconds later, sending the Crusaders out on a 5-on-3 opportunity. DeBoer walked the puck into the middle of the ice, forcing the defender to play him, before dishing the puck to an open McLinskey for a one-time shot past the UConn goalkeeper.
  • UConn tied the game at 3-3 with 7:52 remaining in the frame.
  • Junior Michael Abgrall scored his first collegiate goal, and what proved to be the game winner, just 20 seconds later. Forcing a turnover at center ice, senior Michael Hodge poked the puck to Abgrall who sent a pass to freshman Jarrod Smith. Smith took the wrist shot at the blue line, which the netminder turned aside, but it was Abgrall who found the rebound first, which he picked up and sent into the open net.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior Thomas Gale recorded 34 saves in the win, his second 30+ save performance of the season.
  • The Holy Cross penalty kill unit went a perfect 7-for-7, while the power play unit was 3-for-5.
  • Four players picked up their first points as Crusaders - Heinke (assist), Abgrall (goal), Smith (assist), Kim (goal).

UP NEXT:
  • The two teams will face off again tomorrow afternoon at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
