WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior
Cara McCormack posted a career-high 22 points as the Holy Cross women's basketball team won their fourth straight game, 67-52 against Patriot League foe Army West Point Saturday afternoon in the Hart Center Arena.
With the win, the Crusaders move to 8-5, 2-0 PL while the loss sends the Black Knights to 3-9, 0-2 PL.
McCormack had a massive first half scoring 18 of her 22 points in the first 20 minutes going 8-for-10 (80 percent) from the field. Classmate
Bronagh Power-Cassidy took over the offensive load in the fourth quarter producing nine of her 17 points in the final 10 minutes. Senior
Janelle Allen joined her teammates in double figures with 12 points of her own.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A sophomore Simone Foreman hoop and harm opened up a two possession lead at 11-5. McCormack drilled her second three of the opening 2:51 to grow the lead to 14-5 as Army called a timeout. McCormack scored her 10th point of the first quarter for the double figure edge at 18-7. McCormack notched another bucket giving her 12 markers in the first as the Crusaders led 24-13 through one.
- In the second, sophomore Kaitlyn Flanagan found Allen for a layup underneath to open up a 14 point lead 33-19 with 4:06 left. A Power-Cassidy layup increased the advantage to 18, 41-23 with 35 seconds left in the stanza.
- Holy Cross got two points via the line, but went 0-for-9 to start the third as Army chipped away at the deficit, coming within eight, 43-35 due to a 9-2 run with 4:52 left in the third. Points at the free throw line reestablished a double-digit lead 47-35 at the 4:20 mark. Army pulled within eight, however Flanagan cashed a wing three for the 50-39 score through three.
- With six minutes left, Army trimmed the score to 56-47. Holy Cross added on with Power-Cassidy scoring nine points in the period and recorded stops to wrap up the contest.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- Holy Cross shot 53.3 percent (16-for-30) in the first half, but came out of the locker room and was 1-for-18 (5.6 percent) from the floor in the third quarter. They steadied the ship in the fourth shooting 63.7 percent (7-of-11).
- Foreman tallied a game-high nine rebounds and has 11 games with seven or more rebounds this season.
- Allen scored her 750th career point in the contest.
- Power-Cassidy needs seven more three-pointers to crack the top-10 in program history.
- Flanagan has produced four or more assists 19 times in her career and the Crusaders are 15-4 (.789) in those games.
