WORCESTER, Mass.- The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team will take a trip to the city for game one of two at Boston University (BU) on Friday, Jan. 26. The Crusaders will then host BU for game two of two on Saturday, Jan. 27. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena and 7 p.m. at the Hart Center Rink at Luth Athletic Complex. Fans can watch both games on ESPN+.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (5-16-2, 2-13-2 Hockey East):
- The Crusaders dropped their two game set against Providence this past weekend from Friday, Jan. 19 through Saturday, Jan 20. Holy Cross fell in game one 3-1 and 5-2 in game two.
- In game one, the Friars scored in the first period at 13:03 for the 1-0 lead. The Crusaders equalized the score in the second period with a goal by Sophomore defenseman Casey Borgiel who converted on the power-play at 5:49. She was assisted by junior defenseman Emilie Fortunato and senior forward Bryn Saarela. Providence responded with a goal at 9:28 to reclaim the lead and scored an insurance goal at 17:37 to end the second period 3-1. Neither team scored in the third period with the Friars coming out with the win.
- In game two, Providence netted a goal at 15:16 late in the first period. With 34 seconds left in the period, freshman forward Lulu Rourke pickpocketed a Friar off the faceoff in front of the Providence net and drove in her first collegiate goal.
- Providence netted three goals in the second period, one of which was on a power-play. Rourke struck again at 2:59 in the third period, stealing the puck and taking off on the breakaway for her second unassisted goal of the day. The Friars scored one last goal on an empty net goal at 18:49 to take the 5-2 win.
- Senior forward Millie Sirum is currently leading the charge as Holy Cross's leading scorer with seven goals and holds the most points of any Crusaders with 15 on the year. Borgiel has racked up nine assists so far this season, the most of the Crusaders. Junior defensemen Fortunato, Emma Min and Carmen Elliott led the Crusaders defense in blocked shots. Min leads the team with 34 blocks, then Fortunato who has made 33 followed closely by Elliott who has 28 on the season.
- Senior goalie Madison Beck was between the pipes for game one against Providence where she made 27 saves. Sophomore goalie Brooke Loranger suited up for game two of the series with the Friars making 35 saves in net. Beck now has a 2.43 goals against average and a .919 save percentage this season. Loranger owns a 3.16 goals against average and a .893 save percentage on the year.
TIPS ON THE TERRIERS (11-11-3, 9-8-1 Hockey East):
- Boston University (BU) concluded the 2022-23 season with a 11-20-3 overall record and 9-15-3 conference record. The Terriers finished in seventh place in the Hockey East and fell to Merrimack at home 5-4 in overtime in the Hockey East first round.
- The Terriers most recently hosted Vermont (UVM) on Friday, Jan. 19 and 20 and swept the series over. BU took the 6-1 win in game one and a 4-2 victory in game two. The Terries also took part in the 45th Dunkin' Women's Beanpot on Tuesday, Jan. 23 where they fell to No. 14 Northeastern 2-1 in overtime. taking a close 2-1 loss in overtime.
- In game one of the Terriers got off to a dominant start scoring two minutes into the first period with a goal by junior forward Ani FitzGerald. Senior forward Catherine Foulem got on the board at 16:45 followed by sophomore forward Clara Yuhn netting the third goal for the Terriers with .5 seconds left in the first period.
- The Terries tacked on two more goals in the second period with a goal at 7:39 by sophomore forward Sydney Healey and at 16:20 by senior forward Lacey Martin for the 5-0 result.
- BU managed one last goal early in the third period with a goal by junior defenseman Maggie Hanzel at 6:58 with UVM sneaking in one goal with 47 seconds left in the game.
- Graduate defenseman Nadia Mattivi, sophomore defenseman Brooke Disher and Yuhn all had two assists a piece in the game.
- The Catamounts kicked off game two with a goal at 6:29 quickly equalized by Foulem at 16:49. FitzGerald claimed the lead for BU at 17:49 to end the first period with a 2-1 score.
- UVM tied the game up in the second period with a goal at 14:49. Senior forward Lacey Martin reclaimed the lead one minute into the third period and Mattivi scored the insurance goal at 18:33 on an empty net for the 4-2 win.
- Disher and Yuhn earned another assist each in the competition with senior defenseman Tamara Giaquinto collected two assists in the game.
- In the Beanpot game, Northeastern scored first with 34 seconds left in the second period. The Terriers rallied with Foulem netting the equalizer with 58 seconds left in the third period forcing the game into overtime. The Huskies scored the game winner 27 seconds into overtime for the win at TD Garden.
- Junior goalie Callie Shanahan was between the pipes for game one against UVM making 14 saves and in net for the Beanpot game against No. 14 Northeastern where she made a season high of 28 saves.
- Graduate goalie Alexa Matses was in goal for game two against UVM where she made 17 saves in the outing. Matses is a solid choice for BU in goal and currently has a 2.60 goals against average and a .897 save percentage on the year.
- Martin is currently the Terriers leader in goals (12) and points (21) and has been named the Hockey East Player of the Week due to her leading BU to the Beanpot semifinal win and her two goals against UVM. Yuhn leads the Terriers with the most assists on the team with 11, three of which she collected in the UVM series. Mattivi leads the defense with 26 blocks so far this season.
LAST TIME THEY MET:
- Holy Cross and BU met earlier this season with the Terries taking a close 2-1 win over the Crusaders. Junior forward Madison Michals scored the lone Crusader goal to equalize the score 1-1 in the third period at 10:42. BU reclaimed the lead with less than five minutes left in the game for the win.
- The Crusaders hold a 4-11-0 all-time series and 3-10-0 all-time conference record against the Terriers.
