Power-Cassidy, Foreman carry women’s basketball to eighth straight win

BALTIMORE – The Holy Cross women's basketball team picked up their eighth straight victory by a 71-51 score against Patriot League opponent Loyola (Md.) Saturday afternoon in Reitz Arena.

The win for the Crusaders (12-5, 6-0 PL), their eighth in a row, matched the longest winning streak under head coach Maureen Magarity. The loss sends the host Greyhounds to 7-10, 2-4 PL.

Senior Bronagh Power-Cassidy scored a contest-best 20 points on 66.7 percent (8-for-12) shooting to go with four three-pointers and two steals. Reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Simone Foreman recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and game-high 12 rebounds. Seniors Janelle Allen and Cara McCormack scored nine points apiece.

The stifling Crusader defensive unit held Preseason All-League selection and conference field goal percentage leader Lex Therien to only seven points on 42.9 percent (3-for-7) shooting.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Power-Cassidy scored seven of the first nine points for the Crusaders burying a deep triple for the 9-4 edge. A sophomore Kaitlyn Flanagan four point play coupled with a McCormack three-ball made it 19-7 early. Holy Cross led 21-9 through one.
  • A fast break score off a Flanagan steal to junior Lindsay Berger resulted in a 16 point, 27-11 Crusader lead in the second. A McCormack to Allen and1 and a McCormack triple opened up the largest lead of the first half for the Crusaders at 39-16.
  • Foreman pushed the margin to 53-28 via a layup in the third and collected a rebound later in the stanza for the double-double.
  • With 8:12 left in the game, Power-Cassidy notched her 20th point of the contest. A freshman Janie Bachmann three-pointer with 1:59 to go gave the Crusaders the biggest lead of the game, 71-44.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • Holy Cross shot 64 percent (16-for-25) from the field in the first half and 50 percent (28-for-56) for the game.
  • Power-Cassidy hit four three-pointers and is now tied for eighth all-time in program history with Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (147, 2014-2018).
  • It was the fourth time this season Power-Cassidy has reached the 20+ point mark.
  • Foreman has played five games in her home state of Maryland. She is averaging 14.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 50.9 percent (26-for-51) and 80.0 percent (20-for-25) at the charity stripe. The Crusaders are 5-1 in those games.
