Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Crusaders fall to Friars at home

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team hosted Providence for Friday night Hockey East faceoff. The Crusaders took a close 3-1 loss to the Friars.

The Friars (9-14-1, 8-8-1 Hockey East) took a one goal lead in the first period. Sophomore defenseman Casey Borgiel equalized the score for the Crusaders (5-15-2, 2-12-2 Hockey East) with a power-play goal assisted by junior defenseman Emilie Fortunato and senior forward Bryn Saarela. The Friars reclaimed the lead four minutes later and tacked on an insurance goal by the end of the second period. Providence came out with the 3-1 win over Holy Cross.

Senior goalie Madison Beck had a strong performance in net making 31 saves in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Providence netted a goal at 13:03 in the first period
  • Holy Cross answered back with an equalizing goal in the second period with a power-play goal scored by Borgiel assisted by Fortunato and Saarela at 5:49
  • The Friars reclaimed the lead with a goal at 9:28 in the second period and extended their lead to 3-0 with a power-play conversion at 17:37
  • Neither team scored in the third period

UP NEXT: 

  • The Crusaders return to action for game two of the series on Saturday Jan. 20. Puck drop is set for 2pm at the Schneider Arena.
