Men's hockey earns series split with win over Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Men's ice hockey defeated Army West Point, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Tate Rink to earn the series split. With the win, Holy Cross improves to 11-10-4 (6-8-3 AHA), while Army moves to 6-15-1 (4-10-1 AHA).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior Jake Higgins netted his fourth goal of the season at the 2:21 mark of the first period to open the scoring. Junior Liam McLinskey picked up the rebound off a shot by sophomore Joe Solimine, finding Higgins at the blue line. Higgins passed the puck back to McLinskey at the goal line, who found Higgins in open space for a quick wrist shot that blasted past the Army netminder.
  • The Black Knights tied the game with 51.4 seconds remaining in the frame.
  • Senior Matt Guerra forced a turnover at the blue line four minutes into the second frame, finding senior Alec Cicero in stride. Cicero skated the puck into the zone, finding junior Matt Shatsky for a give-and-go. Shatsky dished the puck back to Cicero as he got to the post for the easy tap in past the sprawling goaltender to regain the lead.
  • Sophomore Jack Seymour extended the Crusaders lead with his third goal of the season at the 10:59 mark of the middle frame. Tracking down a rebound on the wall, Shatsky sent a quick feed to Seymour who turned the corner around an Army defender, finding the open lane for a quick shot over the Army goaltender's shoulder.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Tonight's matchup was the 100th game of Shatsky's career. His two point performance was his second of the season.
  • The Crusaders held the Black Knights to 0-for-2 on the power play, and 1-for-9 over the two game set.
  • Army held the slight edge in shots, 30-28.
  • Junior Thomas Gale recorded 29 saves on the afternoon to earn the win. Army's Evan Szary finished the afternoon with 25.
