Evan Jones and sophomore forward
Ethan Gill both scored goals, as the Holy Cross men's soccer team defeated Army West Point 2-0 at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field. The Crusaders improve to 3-4-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the Patriot league, while the Black Knights fall to 3-4-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Holy Cross jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of play on Jones' goal.
• The play began when senior midfielder
Matt McGonigle passed the ball from the right wing to junior midfielder
Ivor Teagle in the right side of the penalty box.
• Teagle then sent the ball past the goalkeeper in front of the net, where Jones knocked it home with his left foot from three yards out.
• The Crusaders then increased their lead to 2-0 in the 80th minute on Gill's goal.
• Gill collected a loose ball off his chest above the left side of the penalty box, before driving it home with his left foot from 17 yards away.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• Junior goalkeeper
Tristan Stephani picked up his second straight shutout, and his third overall this year.
• The Black Knights finished the game with a 14-10 advantage in shots, while Holy Cross held a 12-7 edge in corner kicks.
• In 46 career games played, Jones has totaled 16 goals and nine assists for 41 points.
• In 22 career games played, Gills now has three goals and one assist for seven points.
