WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior midfielder
Matt McGonigle scored his first goal of the season, as the Holy Cross men's soccer team played Manhattan to a 1-1 tie at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Crusaders and the Jaspers both open the season at 0-0-1 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Manhattan began the scoring in the 25th minute, when Henry Hamilton scored on a penalty kick following a foul in the box.
• In the 61st minute, junior midfielder
Jake Williams sent a free kick into the penalty box, where senior midfielder
Jack Ostrosky was fouled while trying to collect the ball.
• McGonigle converted the ensuing penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1.
• The Crusaders had a chance to win the game in the 88th minute, but a header by McGonigle went off the right post and the game ended in a tie.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• The Crusaders finished the game with a 12-10 advantage in shots, while the Jaspers held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
• Junior goalkeeper
Tristan Stephani made three saves while allowing just one goal in 90 minutes of action.
• In 48 career games played, McGonigle now has six goals and 10 assists for 22 points.

• Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 27, when it travels to Connecticut for a 7:00 p.m. game.
