Baseball earns doubleheader sweep over Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. — The Holy Cross baseball team rolled to a pair of wins in a Patriot League doubleheader against Lafayette on Saturday, May 6. 

GAME ONE
Holy Cross 7, Lafayette 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Leopards took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning after a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single. 
  • Holy Cross put up five runs in the top of the third to quickly take the lead. Sophomore center fielder Connor Cooney singled to drive in a run and an error by the Lafayette right fielder scored another run; sophomore designated hitter Sean Scanlon then hit a two-run homer to give the Crusaders the lead. After a double by freshman Jack Toomey, sophomore left fielder Chris Baillargeon then drove him in with a single to center. 
  • A sacrifice fly by Lafayette in the bottom of the third made it a 5-3 game. 
  • That score held until the top of the seventh, when the Crusaders tacked on two more runs. Baillargeon drew a bases-loaded walk to push in the first run, and a sac fly by junior third baseman Jake McElroy made it a 7-3 contest.

Holy Cross 13, Lafayette 4

THE DECISION:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • The Crusaders again put up five runs in the top of the third. An error scored the first run to put them on the board, and McElroy then had a two-run double to make the score 3-0. Senior first baseman Jordan Petrushka hit a two-run double to push the lead to 5-0. 
  • A solo homer and RBI groundout brought Lafayette within 5-2 in the fourth inning. 
  • In the top of the fifth, Scanlon drove in two runs with a double and McElroy walked with the bases loaded to push the Holy Cross lead to 8-2. 
  • Baillargeon doubled to drive in a run in the seventh and a two-run single in the eighth by Scanlon built an 11-2 advantage for the Crusaders. 
  • The Leopards got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth after an RBI double and RBI single. 
  • The Crusaders scored two runs in the ninth after junior catcher Patrick Casserly had an RBI groundout and sophomore shortstop Jimmy King hit an RBI double.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 
  • Toomey and Scanlon now both have 18 doubles on the season, tied for third in single-season program history. 
  • Senior right-hander Jack DiLauro's 11 strikeouts were a season-high. 
  • Holy Cross hit seven doubles in the second game against the Leopards, marking a single-game high for the team. 
DUE UP: 
  • Holy Cross closes out the regular season with a doubleheader on Sunday, May 7 against Lehigh. First pitch is set for noon in Bethlehem, Pa.
