Freshman right fielder
Jack Toomey of the Holy Cross baseball team has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday, May 10.
Additionally, Toomey and sophomore
Sean Scanlon were both selected to the All-Patriot League second team — Toomey as an outfielder, and Scanlon as an at-large honoree.
This season, Toomey hit a team-best .312 while tying for the team lead with 36 RBI. He recorded a .547 slugging percentage, with 19 doubles on the year along with seven home runs. His 19 doubles are the third most in single-season program history and the most by a Crusader since 2010, while his seven home runs rank tied for ninth in single-season program history.
Toomey was a three-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week honoree and is the sixth Crusader to be named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Year. He led all Patriot League freshmen in doubles, home runs, RBI and slugging percentage; he is tied for the conference lead in doubles.
Scanlon has been named to the All-Patriot League second team for the second consecutive season. This year, he batted .297 with 18 doubles, six home runs and 36 RBI. He ranked third in the Patriot League with a .461 on-base percentage, drawing a league-best 38 walks while also leading the league after being hit by a pitch 16 times.
On the mound, Scanlon started 15 games — tied for the most in Division I — striking out 25 batters over 40.2 innings.
He ranks in the top 10 in program history in doubles, walks and HBPs. Earlier this year, Scanlon was also named the Patriot League Player of the Week.
