Baseball comes up short against Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Holy Cross baseball team came up short against Bucknell, falling 7-5 on Monday, May 1.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Sophomore starting pitcher Sean Scanlon hit a one-out single in the top of the first inning, and freshman right fielder Jack Toomey launched a home run to left-center to give the Crusaders an early 2-0 lead. 
  • Bucknell knotted up the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning, after a solo home run and a sac fly. 
  • After a weather delay, Holy Cross resumed play by taking a 3-2 lead on a sac fly by freshman center fielder CJ Egrie in the top of the fourth. 
  • The Bison immediately tied the game up again at 3-3 after an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth. A few batters later, a two-run single gave Bucknell its first lead of the afternoon at 5-3. 
  • That lead grew to 7-3 after a two-run homer by Sean Keys in the bottom of the sixth. 
  • Toomey drove in two runs with a two-out single in the top of the ninth, bringing Holy Cross within 7-5, but Bucknell prevented a further Holy Cross rally. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 
  • Toomey's home run was his seventh of the season, bringing him into the top 10 in single-season program history. 
  • Toomey now leads the team with 35 RBI this season. 
  • Additionally, Toomey is now tied with Scanlon for the team lead in doubles, with 17 this year. That total ranks tied for fifth in single-season program history. 
DUE UP: 
  • Holy Cross is scheduled to host a Cousy Cup matchup against Brown on Tuesday, May 2 at Fitton Field. 
  • First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
