Baseball drops twinbill at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Holy Cross baseball team fell in both ends of a Patriot League doubleheader against Navy on Saturday, April 8.

GAME ONE
Navy 3, Holy Cross 1

STATS LEADERS:
Holy Cross (10-22, 3-7 PL):
Manning (2-for-4, double)
Jones (1-for-3, double, RBI)
Benton (2-for-3)

Navy (16-16, 9-5 PL):
H. Mitchell (2-for-2, two runs scored)
N. Mitchell (W, 7.0 IP, one run, six strikeouts)
A Smith (1-for-3, two RBI)
Lehnertz (2-for-2, run scored)

THE DECISION:
W: N. Mitchell (6-1)
L: McOsker (2-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Freshman center fielder CJ Egrie was hit by a pitch with one out, and advanced to third after a single by senior first baseman Chris Benton. Sophomore shortstop Brendan Jones then doubled home Egrie to put the Crusaders on the board.
  • Navy tied up the game in the bottom of the third after an RBI groundout.
  • The game was deadlocked until the bottom of the fifth, when back-to-back RBI singles by the Midshipmen made it a 3-1 game.
GAME TWO
Navy 6, Holy Cross 4

STATS LEADERS
Holy Cross:
Cooney (2-for-5, two runs scored, two stolen bases)
Toomey (1-for-3, double, RBI, run scored)
Egrie (1-for-4, RBI)
Scanlon (1-for-3, RBI, run scored)
Macchiarola (3.0 IP, no runs, two strikeouts)

Navy:
A Smith (2-for-4, run scored)
Burch (2-for-3, triple, RBI)
C. Smith (1-for-3, two RBI)

THE DECISION:
W: Early (2-0)
L: Walters (1-2)
S: Kruer (7)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders built a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophomore left fielder Connor Cooney led off with a single, then stole second and third; he scored on a wild pitch. After sophomore designated hitter Sean Scanlon walked, he would later be driven in by a double down the right-field line by freshman right fielder Jack Toomey
  • Toomey walked to lead off the fourth inning, and advanced to second on a failed pickoff before advancing to third on a single by junior third baseman Jake McElroy. A bunt single by Egrie scored Toomey, making it a 3-0 game.
  • Navy quickly evened up the score with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Holy Cross briefly regained the lead in the top of the fifth, with Scanlon driving in Cooney with a single to center. That lead would be short-lived, though, with a sac fly and RBI single in the bottom of the fifth putting the Midshipmen ahead, 5-4.
  • Navy tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single in the sixth.
  • The Crusaders had two runners on with just one out in the ninth, and runners on the corners with two outs, but the ninth-inning rally fell short.
DUE UP:
  • The Crusaders and Midshipmen round out the season series with a contest at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 9.
