HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lafayette took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after four consecutive base hits to open the game.
  • Holy Cross got a run back in the bottom of the second. Freshman catcher Lucas Manning doubled, and advanced to third on a groundout; he was brought home by a sac fly from freshman center fielder CJ Egrie
  • Junior second baseman Jake McElroy singled to lead off the third inning and advanced to third after a base hit by sophomore designated hitter Sean Scanlon. Freshman right fielder Jack Toomey then used a sac fly to tie up the game at 2-2.
  • A walk by Scanlon, a single by Cooney and a single by sophomore Connor Peek loaded up the bases for the Crusaders, and sophomore third baseman Brendan Jones used a two-run single to give Holy Cross a 4-2 lead.
  • The Leopards scored a run in the top of the eighth, and then tied up the game with two outs in the top of the ninth after a throwing error.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, McElroy drew a leadoff walk and Toomey was hit by a pitch with one out. Cooney then hit a ground ball to second base, and the ball bounced off the bag and over the Leopards' shortstop — giving McElroy time to score and giving the Crusaders a 5-4 win.
DUE UP:
  • The Crusaders and Leopards round out the weekend series with a doubleheader at Fitton Field on Saturday, April 22. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
  • Prior to Game 1, Holy Cross will recognize its seven-member senior class as part of Senior Day.
