SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — The Holy Cross baseball team posted a series-opening win over Seton Hall before falling in extra innings in the second half of a doubleheader on Saturday, March 18.
GAME ONE
Holy Cross 6, Seton Hall 4

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A sac fly gave the Pirates a run and a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. That Seton Hall advantage grew to 3-0 by the third inning.
- Sophomore pitcher Sean Scanlon and freshman right fielder Jack Toomey hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the fourth inning and put Holy Cross on the board, 3-1. Sophomore shortstop Brendan Jones drew a walk and junior third baseman Jake McElroy was hit by a pitch to load up the bases; sophomore left fielder Connor Cooney cleared the bases with a double of his own to push the Crusaders into the lead, 4-3.
- Seton Hall tied up the game at 4-4 after center fielder Devin Hack scored on an error.
- Scanlon hit a one-out single in the fifth inning, and advanced to third after Toomey walked and junior pinch hitter Patrick Casserly was hit by a pitch. Scanlon then scored on a wild pitch, giving Holy Cross a 5-4 lead.
- In the top of the ninth, freshman catcher Lucas Manning singled and moved to third after a double by Scanlon. Manning then scored on a sac fly, giving the Crusaders an insurance run.

Seton Hall 4, Holy Cross 3 (10 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- An RBI double gave the Pirates an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
- Holy Cross used a three-run top of the second to take the lead. Cooney drew a one-out walk, and scored after Casserly doubled to right field. McElroy followed with a single, and Casserly and McElroy both scored on a passed ball and then a wild pitch.
- Seton Hall got a run back on a sac fly in the bottom of the second to cut the advantage to 3-2.
- The Pirates were able to tie things up in the eighth inning after a fielding error.
- Seton Hall went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extras.
- Holy Cross put two runners on in the top of the 10th with only one out after a pair of walks, before the Pirates struck out the next two Crusader batters.
- In the bottom of the 10th, Seton Hall loaded up the bases and left fielder Will Gale delivered the game-winning base hit to right field.
DUE UP:
- Holy Cross and Seton Hall round out the weekend series on Sunday, March 19.
- First pitch at Owen T. Carroll Field is set for 12 p.m.
