Baseball falls in doubleheader at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Holy Cross baseball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader at The Citadel on Saturday, March 11 at Riley Park. 

Game 1 was a back-and-forth battle early before The Citadel (10-5) pulled away in the sixth inning to secure the 11-4 victory. In Game 2, the Bulldogs used a big third and fourth inning to secure a 12-1 win over Holy Cross (4-12). 

GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Freshman right fielder Lucas Manning and sophomore pitcher Sean Scanlon opened the contest with back-to-back singles, and a one-out walk drawn by sophomore left fielder Chris Baillargeon loaded up the bases. Sophomore shortstop Brendan Jones delivered a two-run single through the right side to give the Crusaders an early 2-0 advantage. 
  • An RBI double in the second and a solo homer in the third tied things up for the Citadel at 2-2. The Bulldogs then took a 3-2 lead after an error.
  • Manning hit a one-out single in the fourth and advanced to second after narrowly beating out a throwdown after a wild pitch. He then came around to score when Scanlon reached on an error by the first baseman. Scanlon later advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single to left by Baillargeon, giving Holy Cross a 4-3 lead.
  • The Citadel scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to jump back ahead, 5-4. 
  • A six-run sixth put the Bulldogs' lead out of reach, with the contest ending in an 11-4 result.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Citadel got on the board first with a six-run bottom of the third, with the Bulldogs capitalizing on an error. 
  • The Bulldogs tacked on six more runs in the bottom of the fourth to jump out to a 12-0 lead. 
  • Holy Cross loaded up the bases in the top of the ninth inning and a sac fly by sophomore third baseman Connor Peek scored sophomore outfielder Connor Cooney to put the Crusaders on the board, 12-1. 
DUE UP: 
  • Holy Cross will return to the Northeast, with a game scheduled against Boston College on Tuesday, March 14.
