ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team put an end to their two game skid picking up a wire-to-wire 71-52 victory versus Patriot League opponent Navy Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
Junior
Bronagh Power-Cassidy carried the Crusaders (17-5, 9-2 PL) with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-14 (50%) shooting going an unblemished 4-of-4 (100%) at the line with three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Freshman
Simone Foreman was the only other Crusader in double figures scoring 16 points on 4-of-8 (50.0%) field goal efficiency with a career-high matching seven rebounds. Foreman was also 8-of-10 (80%) at the charity stripe.
For Navy (1-21, 1-10 PL), Morganne Andrews had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 boards, but was a -15 when she was on the court. Maren Louridas and Sydne Watts matched her teammate with 10 points each.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders began the contest on a 9-0 run getting five points and four rebounds by sophomore Lindsay Berger over that stretch. Navy called a timeout and responded by dumping in a second chance put back and canning a triple to pull within four, 9-5. Holy Cross reestablished an eight point lead as sophomore Grace Munt buried a baseline jumper to make it 15-7. The lead stayed true after 10 minutes at 17-9.
- Freshman Kaitlyn Flanagan drained two free throws at the line to open up the first double digit lead at 19-9. Six consecutive points by the hosts pulled them within four, 21-17 at the 6:19 mark. Power-Cassidy countered knocking down a triple to increase the margin back to seven 24-17. Junior Janelle Allen hit 1-of-2 at the line to regain the 10 point lead, 31-21 near halftime.
- Navy came out of the locker room on a mission and came within three on a hoop and harm by Louridas to make it 33-30. Holy Cross countered when senior Addisyn Cross and Power-Cassidy drilled back-to-back three on the wings to reestablish a 39-30 lead. Navy put in a bucket and then the Crusaders began to distance themselves with a 12-0 quarter closing run to lead by 17, 51-34. Cross picked off a pass and it resulted in an and1 for Foreman while Flanagan found Allen at the buzzer.
- Power-Cassidy's 20th point of the contest upped the Crusaders' edge to 19, 61-49 late in the fourth.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- Berger finished the first quarter with seven points and five rebounds. She scored only two more points the rest of the way.
- Power-Cassidy has averaged 18.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.0 steals while shooting 53.5% (23-of-43) from the floor over the last three games.
- The Crusaders were 22-of-25 (88.0%) from the free throw line. The last time the Crusaders recorded 20 or more free throws was Dec. 22, 2019 vs. New Hampshire.
